About the Workshop
Translation has always been a very important aspect of academic world, but it never acquired the status of a discipline in the way of Cultural Studies or Women's Studies or Cinema Studies. It remained an area which was considered very important for the dissemination of knowledge, but it continued to exist on the margins of literary studies programmes. At best, it is offered as postgraduate diploma programmes in some universities of India. This is a curious case as the importance of translations and translation studies is becoming more and more important in today's globalized world. The number of high-quality translations of Indian literary texts is abysmally low. The need of the hour is to treat translation as the most important aspect of literary and research studies. This will help in encouraging young scholars not only to take up translation studies as a major discipline but also perform the role expert translators of both literary and non-literary works.
